Darius “Fred” Steger loves to coach, teach and help kids learn because he wants them to see what they are really capable of.

Darius is a proud alumnus of the Central Boys & Girls Club (now James A. Lane). He still remembers the amazing group of staff, volunteers, and coaches that mentored him as he grew up—especially Coach Calvin, Coach Ricky, and Coach Henry, who encouraged him as he learned to play his first sport, soccer. He credits them with fostering his athletic interest and developing his ability.

For Darius, Central Boys & Girls Club wasn’t just a place to go—it was a badge of honor for all the kids who went there. At scrimmages and tournaments throughout the community, Darius and his teammates were proud to let everyone know they were representing Central.

One of his favorite memories of his time in the Club is of the A-Team Banquets, formal celebrations held at the Von Braun Center for members who earned all As and Bs on their report cards. Another memory is of Mrs. Liz calling members up in front of summer assembly to recite the Boys & Girls Club code for $1.

Darius currently serves as the Health and Fitness Director for the 3rd Street Club in Decatur. He also works as a math teacher and basketball coach at R.A. Hubbard High School. He says the Club taught him the importance of building relationships, respecting others, and respecting yourself. He now holds himself to the same high standard that was expected of him when he was younger, and he does the same for the young men and women he comes into contact with every day.
