Profile & History

Step inside any of the 15 Boys & Girls Clubs of North Alabama, and you will find something magical: young people learning and connecting with caring adults. You will see children completing their homework; teens researching colleges or planning a community service project; club members running, jumping, laughing, having fun and improving their health at the same time.

Since 1938, Boys & Girls Clubs of North Alabama (BGCNAL) has been in the forefront of youth development by helping to strengthen North Alabama communities. We are dedicated to ensuring that all youth have greater access to quality programs and services that will fulfill our mission: to inspire and enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens.

In a world that has never seemed more threatening and devoid of promise and purpose for a disproportionate number of America’s children, BGCNAL provides a tangible measure of hope. The Club offers young people what they need and want most:

  • Adults who respect and listen to them

  • A safe environment where they grow and build healthy relationships

  • A fun place to go with interesting and constructive activities that channel youthful energy into challenging pursuits

All BGCNAL programs are based on a youth development strategy which underlies all Boys & Girls Club programs and fosters senses of belonging, competence, usefulness, and influence, building self-confidence and self-esteem.

BGCNAL is part of a nationwide organization (Boys & Girls Clubs of America) that is working to help young people of all backgrounds develop the qualities needed to become responsible citizens and leaders.

The BGCNAL is a 501c3 non-profit organization operating 15 Club sites across North Alabama. The organization employs 25 professional staff supplemented by up to 120 part-time staff and hundreds of volunteers, and offers daily access to a broad range of programs in five core program areas:
